June 2002

Welfare Town Hall
National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support
Saturday, June 15th, 2002
9:00am-12:00pm
Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 3300 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles.

Sponsers: Supporters: ACORN, CHIRLA, LA Coalition to End Hunger and Homelessness, Korean Immigrant Workers Association, Human Services Alliance, Parents Organized for Westside Renewal, Mobilization for the Human Family, Childrens Defense Fund--CA, Pilipino Workers Center, Center for Community Change, Americans for Democratic Action, Asian Pacific American Legal Center, SEIU Local 660, SEIU Local 347, SEIU Local 1877, Californians for Justice, Southern California Ecumenical Council, California Council of Churches, Southern Christian Leadership Council, Liberty Hill Foundation, Barton Hill Neighborhood Organization, and more....

Comments: Join us as we demand education and training, childcare, transitional jobs, access to benefits for immigrants and a strong safety net for people on welfare, low-wage workers, and immigrants. LA County has more welfare recipients than any other state except New York and California itself. Therefore, we must have a strong voice in reforming the weflare system. President Bush's welfare plan would make it harder for families to climb out of poverty and would cost California over $2.8 Billion we don't have! Speakers will include: Miguel Contreras, President, LA County Federation of Labor and Linda Chavez Thompson, Vice President, AFL-CIO. The following elected officials have given us tentative confirmations: U.S. Representative Hilda Solis, U.S. Representative Diane Watson. U.S. Representative Roybal-Allard, Supervisor Yvonne Burke, 2nd District, LA County. Invited: U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra, U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, U.S. Representative Juanita Millender-McDonald. U.S. Senators Boxer and Feinstein will be participating via pre-recorded video, and their staff will be there to take our concerns back to the Senators. BRIEFING ON ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION CAMPAIGN IN CALIFORNIA

AN INITIATIVE OF MAJOR IMPORTANCE TO THE PROGRESSIVE COMMUNITY
-- ELECTION DAY VOTER REGISTRATION --
WILL BE ON THE NOVEMBER 2002 BALLOT.

YOU ARE INVITED TO A BRIEFING ABOUT THE BALLOT QUESTION AND THE CAMPAIGN TO WIN IT. IT WILL TAKE PLACE ON THURSDAY, JUNE 20, FROM 10 A.M. TO NOON, AT LOS ANGELES CITY HALL, 200 North Spring St.
(Use the entrance on Main Street; signs will the posted indicating which room to go to).

STATES WITH ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER VOTER TURNOUT. IN CALIFORNIA, THIS WOULD PARTICULARLY EXPAND TURNOUT AMONG LOW-INCOME VOTERS. IT WOULD PROVIDE A STRATEGIC ORGANIZING HANDLE FOR GRASSROOTS GROUPS -- INCLUDING UNIONS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS -- WITH THE CAPACITY TO ENGAGE IN GET-OUT-THE-VOTE ELECTION-DAY EFFORTS.

THE EVENT WILL INCLUDE A BRIEFING ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT CAMPAIGN AS WELL AS A DISCUSSION OF A NEW REPORT CALIFORNIA VOTES: THE PROMISE OF ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION BY ITS AUTHOR, PROFESSOR R. MICHAEL ALVAREZ OF CALTECH. THE EVENT IS HOSTED BY ROB McKAY OF THE McKAY FOUNDATION AND A PROPONENT OF THE ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION INITIATIVE; MILES RAPOPORT, PRESIDENT OF DEMOS, A THINK TANK THAT SPONSORED BY ALVAREZ REPORT; AND RALPH NEAS OF PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING THIS BACKGROUND BRIEFING SESSION, PLEASE RSVP TO:
Judith Wineman (jwineman@demos-usa.org) or
Mary Manuel (mmanuel@mckayfund.org).
